Teachers have a big effect. It's annoying to get a strict nob-head of a teacher. It can totally put you off liking a subject.

Teachers here are quite the range. Both the best I've ever had and the worst work at my school.

The best is at my current school but the worst is gladly behind me in the middle school I went to...
both are interestingly, English teachers.

Middle School? You have had 3 schools? I've only had two; Primary and Secondary (And obviously college after leaving)

Primary(reception and years 1-4), Secondary(years 5-8), Tertiary (years 9-11 + sixth form)
The tertiary school is joined onto the sixth form.

In the U.S. it's like this:
Elementary School: Kindergarten ( Age 5), Grades 1 - 5 Middle School: Grades 6 - 8 High School: Grades 9 - 12 College (Which means university - in vernacular here the words are synonymous)

does that mean your last year of mandatory school ends when students are 16/17 as opposed to 15/16 here?
and after tertiary school we have sixth form or college (either or, they make little difference as far as I know) then University

Well there are many high school dropouts, but it could be considered mandatory.
I will graduate from high school when I'm 18.
