It's a New Years Song (and Founders Day song) that symbolises new beginings yet 'toasting' the past; It is largely based upon the famous Auld Lang Syne song from which the tune is also taken, yet several verses and the chorus are adapted for the literal meaning :
Verse 1
Should days gone by be forgot, (Sang as "Should days gone by.. be for-got)
and never brought to mind,
Should days gone by be forgot,
and once upon a time,
CHORUS:
For once upon a time, my dear,
for once upon a time,
we'll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
for once upon a time.
And surely I’ll buy your pint cup !
And surely you’ll buy mine !
And we'll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
for once upon a time.
CHORUS:
For once upon a time, my dear,
for once upon a time,
we'll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
for once upon a time.
And surely I’ll buy your pint cup !
And surely you’ll buy mine !
And we'll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
for once upon a time.
Verse 2
We two have run about the hills,
and picked the daisies fine ;
But we’ve wandered many a weary foot,
since once upon a time.
CHORUS:
For once upon a time, my dear,
for once upon a time,
we'll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
for once upon a time.
And surely I’ll buy your pint cup !
And surely you’ll buy mine !
And we'll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
for once upon a time.
Verse 3
We two have paddled in the stream,
from morning sun till dine (dinner time) ;
But seas between us broad have roared
since once upon a time.
CHORUS:
For once upon a time, my dear,
for once upon a time,
we'll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
for once upon a time.
And surely I’ll buy your pint cup !
And surely you’ll buy mine !
And we'll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
for once upon a time.
Verse 4
And there’s a hand my trusty friend !
And give us a hand o’ thine !
And we’ll take a right good-will draught,
for once upon a time
